Head Start and Early Head Start rely heavily on families and community members to strengthen its programs.
The Policy Council is made up of parents and community representatives. Members have broad authority and review over program goals; policies, including the establishment of enrollment criteria; budgeting; and fundraising.
Types of Members:
- Parents (or persons acting in the same role as parents) of children currently enrolled in Head Start and/or Early Head Start. The parent can only represent the classroom of his/her child.
- Community member. These include (1)private individuals and representatives of public agencies or organizations interested in or responsible for improving the educational opportunities, health, nutrition, and socioeconomic well being of infants, toddlers and their families and (2)past parents who are formerly enrolled in Head Start and/or Early Head Start.
Becoming a Policy Council Member – Parent members are elected by a majority vote at the first parent meeting of each school year at the center. One parent and one alternate are chosen from each classroom. Community members are selected and nominated by the Policy Council.
