For 50 years Head Start has been the premier model for providing the whole child an opportunity for success in school and in life. Since the summer of 1965, more than 31 million children have benefitted from Head Start’s comprehensive services – they have used those opportunities and become business women and men, professors, teachers, lawyers, mayors, Members of Congress, athletes, foundation Presidents, Grammy-winning musicians, poets, and parents.
On Thursday, April 16, 2015, Early Head Start Mobile and our child care partner centers celebrated Head Start’s 50th Anniversary – 50 years of opportunities for children. Children and adults alike joined together to mark the momentous occasion. Not only are we providing quality care for infants and toddlers, we are empowering families with an opportunity to take on leadership and advocacy roles in their children’s education.
An announcement of Early Head Start expansion was also highlighted on April 16th. Thanks to two federal grants, facilitated by the Alabama Department of Human Resources and the Office of School Readiness, GRECS is expanding from five child care partners to seven, and will serve 192 children moving forward, instead of the original 104.
